I must thank you for your prompt, efficient and personable approach to the job. At a time when life was a little overwhelming, you gave me a degree of advice and confidence that I needed. I was never made to feel like a mere number in your list of jobs, and naturally the time that you took to get to know me and assess my needs shines through in the CV that you have produced. I would not hesitate to recommend your service. (Hospitality Manager)

Very professional. I liked that you gave me an appraisal before ordering, so I was able to see what you thought was wrong. Very satisfied and will come back again and tell me friends about it. As far as my job search is progressing I am happy to say it is over and I found what I was looking for. The CV played a huge role in it I am sure. (Senior Network Engineer)

Curriculum Vitae Tips ...

A CV is your sales tool and needs to sell your skills, experience and achievements. As you have just 30 seconds in which to make a first impression, your CV needs to quickly capture and the hold the reader’s attention.

The marks of a good Curriculum Vitae!

  • A Curriculum Vitae should be a well-written concise document that is no longer than two pages.
  • Printed on a good quality paper, typically 100gsm in weight and watermarked.
  • Well presented and laid out, with lots of white space. Avoid complex formatting, shading, boxes and stylised fonts.
  • Avoid using long paragraphs and sentences. Keep paragraphs to no longer than four lines and sentences to no longer than 15 words.
  • Keep your CV honest and factual.
  • Sell yourself and be positive.
  • Include a personal profile of three to four lines that sums up your key experience, skills, achievements and motivations. Ensure that a little of your personality is also conveyed.
  • Avoid producing a job description. Employers are interested in the benefits of hiring you! Work experience should therefore focus on your achievements and should highlight the benefits that your work has had for an organisation. Quantify achievements wherever possible.
  • Information must be presented in reverse chronological order (most recent first).
  • No misspellings or grammatical errors.
  • Avoid repetition as it reduces the impact of your CV.

Avoid including unnecessary information such as:

  • Titles and headings such as ‘Curriculum Vitae’ or ‘Resume’ as it should be obvious what document this is.
  • Reason for leaving - this will be covered in the interview.
  • Salary details - this can take you out of contention before you have started.
  • Photographs - unless it is applicable to the type of work you are involved in e.g. modelling.
  • Weaknesses - never tell readers what you do not have or what you have not had the opportunity to do yet.
  • Jargon and Acronyms - ensure your Curriculum Vitae is reader friendly to as many people as possible.
  • References - you can state that they are available on request, but it is inappropriate and unprofessional to include them in your CV. These will betaken up at offer stage
  • Personal Details such as Marital Status, Religion, Nationality, Children etc. - this has no bearing on your ability to do the job.

Finally, you should select a format of Curriculum Vitae that is most suited to you and your background.
